In my last article, I had looked at the stats of the big 4 in the Men’s section. Now that the draws have been announced, I thought it will be a good idea to look at the top seeds in the Women’s draw and compare their statistics before the start of the first GS of the year 2012.
Here are the stats for the top female players in 2011 on Hard court and their Australian Open Match Record so far:
Name of The Player | 2011 Match Record on Hard Court | AO* Match Record | AO 2011 Result
Win | Loss | Winning % | Win | Loss | Winning %
Caroline Wozniacki | 40 | 11 | 78% | 13 | 4 | 76% | SF |
Petra Kvitova | 30 | 11 | 73% | 5 | 3 | 63% | QF |
Maria Sharapova | 25 | 10 | 71% | 28 | 7 | 80% | 4th Round |
Li Na | 16 | 12 | 57% | 18 | 6 | 75% | Finalist |
Sam Stosur | 31 | 14 | 69% | 14 | 9 | 61% | 3rd Round |
Kim Clijsters | 19 | 5 | 79% | 38 | 8 | 83% | Winner |
Serena Williams | 18 | 2 | 90% | 51 | 6 | 89% | Did not play |
Sabine Lisicki | 23 | 14 | 62% | 4 | 3 | 57% | Did not play |
Serena Williams has won Australian Open 5 times in the last 9 years and her record (89% win record equivalent to Steffi Graf) definitely shows her dominance on this surface. Although she is seeded 12th, she is one player who cannot be taken lightly or played at a level of her ranking.
Another player, I will be looking forward to is Kim Clijsters with a 83% win record at Australian Open. As this is the last AO of her career before retiring next year, she will be one player who will be ready to add to her legacy and a total of 4 GS.
One more player that has the potential to leave a mark is Petra Kvitova. She is young, fresh, a player of immense promise and someone who has ignited hopes of adding stability to an otherwise unstable women’s tennis circuit. The only question will be- is she ready to take on the pressure of becoming a future World no. 1 and play up to her potential?
For the rest of the players, the stats are there and I would love to hear your comments on their chances.
In the end, just to revisit old memories and history of Australian open, I will leave you all with the 1988 AO final between Steffi Graf and Chris Evert. Enjoy watching!
