It's a classic quote by Renzo Gracie talking about how if you hang in there in the beginning when you are the "nail", one day you will become the "hammer". It's sort of along the same lines as a Jiu Jitsu colleague of Renzo's, Caio Terra, mentions as part of his philosophy:
If you don't about losing, if you don't care about being smashed at the gym, you'll focus on technique. You may be smashed for a long time, but when you really get techniques, when you really get it, there's no strength that will stop you.
If you really want to get good at something you have to go through that period where you suck terribly at it. But that can be a fun time as well; it's all perception and perspective. Just focus on technique, getting better, and enjoying the process. Any suffering you have during this time is illusion. It's your ego taking a bruising, butt the ego is not a real phenomenon, it's a mental construction. It's like feeling anxiety about encountering the boogeyman at night. It's an apparition of the mind.
One of the best things about having this website MMAquotable.com and our Twitter account @mmaquote is inspiring others. That in itself is the greatest reward. Other followers on Twitter who have said kind words of motivation including the following:
