As I sat in the Bristol rush hour traffic, I began to fear the worst: the gym was going to be packed, I knew it. Still, as it was for the cause, it had to be done. Strange thing to spring to mind, but the gym’s aspect lends itself to the car park facing due east. As the nights have been getting lighter, the sun’s reflective farewell has played out like a welcoming firework display. But not today. Sun, yes; windscreens, few and far between. I rolled almost to the front row of the car park and noticed an unusual amount of treadmills standing idle as I peered through the full-length, blue-tinted windows. The first thing that sprung to mind was “Have they put their membership fees up?”. I suppose, doing abs workouts at home, after your initial investment in training equipment and the best abs program, the lack of monthly fees is something you take for granted. I’m probably preaching to the converted as, for many readers of this blog, fitness is a way of life. Something happens, a life event or chance meeting, and this internal switch flicks on; they get the whole keep fit and diet ethos and are hooked for life. Despite this, they continue to pay their gym membership in the vain hope that when they next look at their bank statement it will spur them into action. It very rarely does.
